Synopsis: Private Edmund Mccrudden receives his first police mission from celebrated Inspector Thorndike himself. Edmund’s excitement dims a little when the case appears to be a snipe hunt based on wild hearsay, but the shroud of secrecy, conflicting stories of trusted sources, and not a little curiosity keep him following the trail.

The rumors of a band of women who rob gentlemen and punish wife-beaters are, in fact, real enough, which Edmund discovers when the group takes him captive after he witnesses one of their robberies. The young recruit starts out determined to uphold the straitlaced values he was taught. But as their stories begin to unfold, tragic, brutal, and yet triumphant, he finds his resolve slipping and must discover his own code of justice, independent of his hero’s.
